Scripture:
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” — John 1:5
This is one of the most profound paradoxes of our faith: light never needs to overpower darkness with noise or force. It simply shines, and darkness retreats. Hope is like that. It doesn’t need to be dramatic. It doesn’t need to announce itself. It doesn’t even need to be large. A single flame can illuminate a room that has been dark for hours.
In Advent, we remember that Christ came not with spectacle but with simplicity — a child in a manger, a quiet light in a world thick with shadows. And that light was enough. Hope doesn’t always arrive with clarity; sometimes it arrives as a whisper, a nudge, a reminder that God is still here.
So when your world feels dim, look for the small lights — the kindness offered at the right moment, the Scripture that settles your spirit, the prayer that steadies your breath. These are God’s way of reminding you that the darkness does not get the final word.
Application:
Notice one “small light” today — a moment of beauty, kindness, or grace — and let it remind you that God is near.
Prayer:
Lord, shine Your light into the places where I feel the weight of darkness.
40 Days of Gratitude Reminder:
Give thanks today for one small light God has placed in your path.
