Scripture:
“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God.” — 1 John 3:1
Love, in Scripture, is never cautious or calculating. It is generous to the point of excess. John reminds us that God’s love is not measured out carefully, but poured out lavishly, freely, and without condition. Divine love does not wait to see how we will respond before it gives itself away.
This is one of the great paradoxes of love: God loves us before we are lovable, before we are finished, before we are even aware of our need. Love is not a reward for spiritual maturity; it is the soil in which maturity grows. We do not earn God’s love — we awaken to it.
So often, we approach love as something to be managed or protected. God reveals love as something to be trusted. Love is strongest not when it holds back, but when it opens itself fully.
Application:
Notice where you tend to ration love — for yourself or for others — and ask God to help you receive love as gift rather than achievement.
Sentence Prayer:
God, teach me to live from Your generous love rather than striving for it.
40 Days of Gratitude Reminder:
Give thanks today for one way God has loved you freely, without requiring anything in return.
