Weekday Word w/ Eric

Jesus Says, “I Want to…”

Scripture:
“A man with leprosy… begged him, ‘Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.’ Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. ‘I am willing,’ he said. ‘Be clean!’” (Luke 5:12–13)
“And the news about him spread all the more…” (Luke 5:15)

There’s a question hiding inside the leper’s request: Can I hope for this… without getting my heart crushed? “If you are willing…” is the language of someone who has been disappointed enough times to be careful with faith. He believes Jesus is able. He’s unsure if Jesus is willing.

Luke wants you to see what happens next, because it reveals the heart of God. Jesus doesn’t keep distance. Jesus doesn’t merely speak from afar. He touches. And then he answers the question directly: “I want to.” Not “I can.” Not “I might.” Not “Let’s see.” I want to.

That means the man is not a problem to manage—he’s a person to love. It means Jesus’ desire is not primarily to preserve religious cleanliness or social comfort, but to restore a human being. Luke is showing us that healing isn’t a side hobby for Jesus; it’s an expression of his deepest compassion.

This is important because many of us carry the same fear the leper carried: I know God can… but does God want to? Luke’s answer is the outstretched hand of Jesus. Whatever mystery remains about timing and outcomes, Luke makes one thing plain: God’s posture toward the broken is not disgust, but desire—desire for cleansing, restoring, and making whole.

And notice: Luke says the news spreads. Why? Because “I want to” is contagious hope. When people discover that God is not repelled by their condition, word gets around. Grace always becomes a rumor.

So today, when you pray for healing—physical, emotional, relational, spiritual—hold onto Jesus’ words. If you’re the one in need, let them steady you. If you’re the one who can help, let them shape you: “I want to.”

Application

  • If you’re hurting, pray honestly: “Jesus, I believe you can. Help me trust that you want to.”
  • If someone in your world is struggling, take one concrete step toward their healing (visit, meal, appointment ride, prayer, advocacy).
  • Practice Jesus’ posture in one sentence today: “I want to help.”

PrayerJesus, you are not distant from our pain. You touch what others avoid. You speak willingness over our fear. Where I doubt your desire, reassure me. Where I can be part of healing, make me willing too—steady, compassionate, and brave. Amen.
