Weekday Word w/ Eric

The Outsider Becomes the Witness

Scripture:
“Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.” (Luke 8:39)
“They overcame… by the word of their testimony.” (Acts 4:33; cf. Acts’ witness theme)

The man begs to stay with Jesus. That makes sense—if you’ve been rescued, you want to cling to the Rescuer. But Jesus gives him a different calling: go home, tell your story. In Luke’s Gospel, testimony is not reserved for the polished, the trained, the impressive. The restored outsider becomes the messenger.

This is one of Luke’s most beautiful reversals. The man who was naked and isolated becomes a public witness. The man who lived among tombs becomes a living sign of life. The man everyone feared becomes someone sent. Luke is preaching: “Nobody” is a lie. Jesus gives people new identities and new assignments.

And it foreshadows Acts. Acts is basically the story of ordinary people telling what Jesus has done—across borders, cultures, and cities. The gospel spreads through witness. Not perfect witness—real witness. Testimony from people who know what bondage feels like and what freedom tastes like.

Here’s a pastoral note: Jesus doesn’t send him away from community. He sends him into community. “Home.” “City.” That’s part of salvation too—rejoining life. Your healing, your restoration, your freedom is not just for you. It becomes hope for others who still feel trapped.

So what’s your version of this? Not everyone is called to a microphone. But everyone has a “home” and a “city”—a circle where your story can carry grace. Sometimes the most powerful evangelism is simply saying, “I wasn’t okay… and Jesus met me.”

Application

  • Write a 3–sentence testimony: “What I was like… what Jesus did… what’s different now.”
  • Share it with one trusted person this week, or use it as a private prayer of gratitude.
  • Look for one person who feels “too far gone,” and offer hope without pressure.

PrayerJesus, thank you for what you have done for me. Where I have felt like a nobody, give me a new name and a new calling. Make my story a doorway for someone else’s hope. Send me back into my home and city as a gentle witness of your grace. Amen.
