Weekday Word w/ Eric

Early Dawn Disciples

Scripture:
“On the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb…” (Luke 24:1)
“But these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them.” (Luke 24:11)

Luke’s Easter begins in the half-light—early dawn, when most of the world is still asleep, when grief is still heavy, when faith feels more like showing up than singing. The women come with spices, not with certainty. They come because love keeps moving, even when it doesn’t know what else to do.

And then Luke tells the truth about how the news is received: the apostles dismiss it. They call it nonsense. The first Easter testimony is carried by people whose voices were easy to disregard, and Luke refuses to soften that. He wants you to see something about God: God is not waiting for the “right people” to approve the message. God entrusts resurrection to the ones the world underestimates.

Here’s the thing—many of us carry an “idle tale” wound. We’ve spoken truth and been dismissed. We’ve prayed honestly and felt ignored. We’ve shared pain and been minimized. If that’s you, Luke’s Easter begins with a kind of holy solidarity: God knows what it is to have the truth brushed aside, and God still speaks.

Today you don’t have to manufacture certainty. You can simply be an early-dawn person—showing up, taking the next faithful step, letting God meet you in the half-light. Resurrection doesn’t start with perfect faith. It starts with faithful presence.

Application

  • Take one “early dawn” step today: prayer, Scripture, a text to someone, showing up to worship, asking for help.
  • If you’ve been dismissed, name that hurt to God and ask for healing.
  • Make room for someone else’s voice—especially the one you’re tempted to overlook.

Prayer
Risen Jesus, meet me in the half-light. When my faith feels small, steady me. When I’ve been dismissed, remind me you still speak. Make me faithful in the simple steps of love. Amen.
