Roll the Stone Away in Me

Scripture:
“They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in, they did not find the body.” (Luke 24:2–3)

Easter with a lecture. It begins with a stone that has been moved. Something that looked final is no longer final. Something that felt sealed is suddenly open. And before anyone understands what it means, the emptiness speaks: the body is not there.

Stones are what keep people out. Stones block access. Stones mark the end of belonging. Stones say, “This is as far as you go.” Many of us carry stones in the soul—the heavy, immovable convictions that we don’t belong, that we’re too late, too broken, too complicated, too stained.

But Easter is God’s refusal to leave you sealed inside those stories. The rolled-away stone is not just a tomb detail—it’s a sign that God can change what you thought couldn’t change, and open what you thought couldn’t open. Perspective is everything, right? The place of death becomes the doorway to life.

And Luke is honest: the first response is confusion. They “did not find.” They don’t instantly celebrate; they wonder. That’s good news for anyone who’s in a season of not knowing—when you can’t see the next step, when you can’t feel hope yet. God can be at work even when you are confused.

So today, don’t start with “I have to feel Easter.” Start with, “God can move stones.” Start with the possibility that the story you thought was sealed might be opening.

Application

  • Name one “stone” you’re carrying (shame, fear, grief, resentment, control). Offer it to God in one sentence.
  • Take one practical step toward life: therapy appointment, conversation, apology, walk, rest, community.
  • Notice where you’ve been looking for life in dead places—and gently turn.

Prayer
God of resurrection, roll away the stones that keep me trapped—stones of shame, fear, and despair. Open what feels closed in me. Teach me to trust that you are working even when I don’t understand. Amen.
