Paradise for the Condemned

Scripture:
“One of the criminals… said, ‘Jesus, remember me…’” (Luke 23:42)
“Today you will be with me in Paradise.” (Luke 23:43)
“Through this man forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you.” (Acts 13:38)

Luke’s crucifixion scene is the climax of the Gospel of Outsiders. Jesus is literally “numbered with the transgressors”—crucified between criminals. The center of salvation history becomes a place of public shame, state violence, and social disposal. Luke is telling you: God meets humanity at its worst.

And then the astonishing thing happens: the clearest confession at the cross comes from a criminal. Not a disciple. Not a priest. Not a respectable citizen. A condemned man prays a prayer that outsiders have prayed for centuries: “Remember me.” It’s simple, it’s honest, it’s desperate—and Jesus answers with outrageous grace.

“Today.” Not “after you’ve cleaned up.” Not “once you’ve made restitution.” Not “when you’ve proven sincerity.” Today. Luke’s Jesus refuses to make salvation a reward for insiders. He makes it a gift, offered even at the very edge of life.

Luke also includes the watching women and the centurion—outsiders in different ways—who see what others miss. The cross is surrounded by people who have little power, but who bear witness. Luke is quietly saying: the kingdom is recognized most clearly by those who know they need mercy.

And Acts becomes the echo of Luke 23: forgiveness is preached openly, not to the already-perfect, but to the guilty, the complicit, the crushed, the last-minute. If paradise opened for a criminal beside Jesus, it can open for anyone who dares to ask.

So today, let the criminal’s prayer become yours. Whatever your past, whatever you carry, whatever shame whispers in your ear—Luke says Jesus is still the friend of outsiders.

Application

  • Pray the criminal’s prayer once today: “Jesus, remember me.”
  • If you’re stuck in shame, tell one trusted person what you’re carrying—bring it into light.
  • Extend mercy this week to someone you’re tempted to write off.

Prayer
Jesus, remember me. Remember the parts of me I want to hide, the wounds I’ve caused and the wounds I carry. Speak your “today” over my fear, and make me a living witness of your mercy. Amen.
