Hidden Grace (In Plain View)

Scripture:
“Jesus himself came near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him.” (Luke 24:15–16)

One of the strangest parts of the Emmaus story is that Jesus is right there, and they don’t recognize him. They’re looking at him, talking to him, walking with him—and still… nothing clicks.

And if we’re honest, that’s not just their story. Sometimes grace is staring us in the face and we can’t see it. Sometimes we’re so preoccupied with what should have happened—what God could have done, what we expected, how we assumed the story would go—that we miss the quiet mercy that’s already happening.

Luke is not trying to make the disciples look foolish here. Luke is trying to make them look familiar. Discouragement has a way of narrowing your vision. Trauma can make you hyper-focused on what was lost. Anxiety can make you scan for threats. And suddenly, even God’s presence can feel like a stranger.

Here’s the hopeful twist: Jesus doesn’t wait for recognition to offer companionship. He walks with them before they “get it.” He listens before he corrects. He engages their questions before he reveals himself. That is such good news for discouraged, disbelieving outsiders: you don’t have to be spiritually sharp to be spiritually loved.

So today, maybe the invitation is simple: ask God to widen your vision. Ask for eyes to notice grace—small grace, quiet grace, “I made it through one more day” grace. Because the living Christ is often closer than we think.

Application

  • Pray this simple request today: “Jesus, help me recognize you.”
  • Make a short list of “quiet graces” from the last week (a kind word, strength to endure, a meal, a moment of peace).
  • When you feel overwhelmed, practice a grounding question: “Where might Jesus already be walking with me?”

PrayerJesus, I confess how often I miss you when I’m tired or disappointed. Walk with me anyway. Open my eyes to your grace, and teach me to recognize your presence in the ordinary and the hard. Amen.
