Scripture:
“Then Agrippa said to Paul, ‘You almost persuade me to become a Christian.’”
— Acts 26:28
Reflection:
There is something haunting about that word almost. Agrippa was not hostile to Paul. He was not ignorant of what he was hearing. He was not far away from the truth. He was close enough to feel its pull, close enough to recognize something compelling in the gospel, close enough to say, “You almost persuade me.”
And yet, close is not the same as surrendered.
Here’s the thing — many of us know what it means to live near the things of God. We know the stories, the songs, the rhythms, the vocabulary of faith. We know how to appear faithful, how to talk about grace, how to move in religious spaces. But beneath all of that is a deeper question: Has Jesus truly taken hold of my life? Not just around me, but in me. Not just in my language, but in my heart.
The danger of “almost” is that it can feel safe. It lets us stay near Jesus without yielding fully to Jesus. It lets us admire the gospel without being changed by it. But Christ has not come merely to interest us. He has come to transform us, to call us beyond familiarity into living discipleship.
Today is a good day to be honest. Where have you been near the things of God without truly opening yourself to the work of God? Where have you settled for recognition instead of surrender?
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, save me from settling for “almost.” Draw me deeper than habit, closer than familiarity, and beyond surface faith. Take hold of my heart and make me wholly yours. Amen.
Practice:
Sit quietly for a few moments and ask, “Lord, where am I near you, but still holding back?”
