Scripture:
“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”
— James 1:22
Reflection:
Most spiritual distortion does not begin with open rebellion. It begins with drift.
A life of faith can slowly, almost imperceptibly, move off-center. Not because we wake up one day and decide to reject Christ, but because other voices begin to shape us more deeply than his voice. Our preferences begin to guide us more than Scripture. Our fears begin to shape us more than grace. Our wounds begin to define us more than the healing presence of Jesus. Bit by bit, what once was clear begins to blur.
That is what makes drift so dangerous. It rarely announces itself. It does not usually come crashing through the front door. It slips in quietly — through distraction, neglect, self-protection, exhaustion, and the slow rearranging of our loves.
And yet the mercy of God is that he does not merely expose our drift. He calls us home. He realigns us. He tells us the truth because he loves us too much to let us wander without notice. That means we do not have to fear self-examination. The God who reveals is also the God who restores.
So perhaps the invitation today is simple: stop long enough to notice what has been shaping you. Ask the Spirit to show you where drift has begun, and trust that the same God who convicts also heals.
Prayer:
Gracious God, make me aware of any drift in my life. Where I have slowly moved away from your heart, call me back. Where my faith has grown thin or distorted, realign me by your Spirit. Amen.
Practice:
Ask yourself, “What has been shaping me most lately — Jesus, or something else?”
