The Invisible Water We Swim In

Scripture:
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds…”
— Romans 12:2

Reflection:
Culture always disciples us. It teaches us what to value, what to fear, what to pursue, what to celebrate, and what to call success. It forms our instincts before we even realize it is happening. That is why following Jesus requires more than occasional belief. It requires deep discernment.

The question is not whether we are being shaped. We all are. The real question is who or what is doing the shaping.

Sometimes culture teaches us to prize comfort over sacrifice, image over character, outrage over mercy, success over faithfulness, tribe over truth. And when those values seep into our faith, Christianity can begin to sound Christian without looking much like Jesus. The language may remain, but the center begins to shift.

To follow Christ is to allow him to challenge the assumptions we have absorbed. It is to let his kingdom question our politics, our ambitions, our habits, our relationships, and even our definitions of blessing. That is not easy work, but it is holy work. God is still doing it. He is still renewing minds, softening hearts, and teaching his people to see clearly.

A faith shaped by Christ will not always fit neatly within the patterns of the world around us. But it will begin to look more like truth, more like mercy, and more like Jesus.

Prayer:
Lord, renew my mind. Where I have absorbed the values of the world without noticing, awaken me. Shape me more deeply by your truth, your love, and your kingdom. Amen.

Practice:
Name one belief or instinct you have that may have come more from culture than from Christ.
