Weekday Word w/ Eric

An Alignment Check

Scripture:
“Search me, O God, and know my heart… and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
— Psalm 139:23–24

Reflection:
Every now and then, life needs alignment.

A car can keep moving while still pulling in the wrong direction. At first, it may not seem like much. It still runs. It still gets where it is going. But over time, what is misaligned begins to wear down everything connected to it. The same can be true spiritually. We may keep functioning, keep doing what we have always done, even keep showing up in the right places, all while our hearts are being pulled off-center.

The good news is that alignment is not punishment. It is mercy.

When we ask God to search us, we are not asking for condemnation. We are opening ourselves to the healing honesty of grace. We are saying, “Lord, tell me the truth about me — not so I can despair, but so I can be restored.” That is a brave prayer, but it is also a hopeful one.

As this series begins, that may be one of the best prayers we can pray. Not a defensive prayer. Not a polished prayer. Just an honest one: Lord, search me. Show me where I have drifted. Show me where my faith has become tangled with fear, pride, resentment, comfort, or self-protection. Show me where I have settled for almost. And by your grace, lead me into what is altogether true.

God does not reveal in order to reject. He reveals in order to heal.

Prayer:
Search me, O God, and know my heart. Show me where I am misaligned, where I have drifted, and where I need your healing grace. Lead me again in the way everlasting. Amen.

Practice:
Pray Psalm 139:23–24 slowly two or three times today, and leave space for silence after each reading.
