Cooling Embers

Scripture:
“And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together…”
— Hebrews 10:24–25

Reflection:
Consider an ember pulled away from the fire. For a while it still glows. For a while it still carries searing heat. For a while it still looks alive. But slowly, quietly, almost imperceptibly, it cools. That is such the apt picture of isolated faith. It may survive for a season, but it does not flourish indefinitely.

That is part of what makes spiritual drift so difficult to recognize. We often think collapse will be dramatic. Sometimes it is. But more often it is gradual. We stop showing up. We stop sharing honestly. We stop letting anyone see what is really happening in us. We keep listening to sermons and reading devotionals and praying in private, and those things are good, but the fire grows dim because we are no longer close enough to others to be stirred, challenged, encouraged, and carried.

The writer of Hebrews understood that community is not an optional accessory to discipleship. We gather so that we might “consider one another,” which means paying attention, noticing, provoking one another toward love and good works. That kind of spiritual formation cannot happen in isolation. We can learn alone in some ways, but we cannot practice belonging alone.

God the Great Tapestry Weaver has a way of using other people to keep holy fire burning in us. Sometimes that comes through encouragement. Sometimes through accountability. Sometimes through shared worship, shared meals, shared tears, and shared service. The point is not simply to be around people. The point is to remain close enough to grace-filled community that love stays warm.

Application:
Identify one way your spiritual life has cooled because you have become too disconnected from others.

Prayer:
Gracious God, when I begin to drift toward isolation, draw me back toward the warmth of your people. Rekindle what has cooled in me, and place me again where love, truth, and grace can shape my life. Amen.
