Stay For the Magic

Scripture:
“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”
— Galatians 6:2

Reflection:
One of the quiet temptations in modern life is to remain just close enough to be present, but never close enough to be known. We can slide in and out of spaces, keep things polite, protect our privacy, and avoid the risk of deeper connection. It feels safer that way. But it also keeps us from one of the great gifts of Christian community: being carried when we no longer have the strength to carry ourselves.

We need encouragement we cannot generate for ourselves, correction we cannot give ourselves, gifts we do not possess, and people who will carry us when we cannot carry ourselves.  That is not weakness. That is discipleship. To be known is to admit that we are not self-made souls. We are creatures of grace, and grace often arrives through the hands and voices of others.

Of course, being known is risky. It means people may see our wounds, our doubts, our limitations, our unfinished places. It means leaving behind the illusion of self-sufficiency. It means trusting that vulnerability under Christ can become a place of healing rather than shame. That does not happen overnight. It often happens slowly, as trust is rebuilt and relationships deepen.

Still, there is no shortcut. If we always remain at the edge, we may protect ourselves from disappointment, but we will also miss the deeper joy of being carried, challenged, and loved in community. Sometimes the holiest thing we can do is simply stay long enough to be known.

Application:
Tell one trusted person this week something real about your life that you usually keep hidden behind polite conversation.

Prayer:
God of mercy, give me courage to be known. Tear down the walls I have built to protect myself from disappointment, and teach me to trust your grace at work through faithful people. Amen.
