Weekday Word w/ Eric

When the Word Becomes Entertainment

Scripture:
“Indeed you are to them as a very lovely song of one who has a pleasant voice and can play well on an instrument; for they hear your words, but they do not do them.”
— Ezekiel 33:32

Reflection:
Ezekiel offers one of the most piercing indictments in all of Scripture. The people gather. They listen. They appear interested. They even seem to enjoy what they hear. But God says their hearts are set somewhere else. They hear the prophet the way someone listens to a beautiful song. They admire the sound, but they do not yield to the message.

That is the danger of consumer religion. It is not simply that people stop showing up. Sometimes they keep showing up. Sometimes they even enjoy the experience. They appreciate the delivery. They admire the performance. They leave with a strong impression of the moment. And yet nothing changes in the way they love, forgive, serve, repent, pray, or obey. The word of God becomes content rather than command, inspiration rather than surrender.

That can happen more easily now than ever before. We can listen to sermon clips, podcasts, livestreams, reels, and worship sets all week long. Some of that can be deeply helpful. But it can also create the illusion of spiritual maturity without the actual practices that shape mature faith. We can hear constantly and still remain untouched where it matters most.

God never meant his word to be one more thing we sample and rate. His word is meant to place us under his authority, to call us to repentance, to confront us, comfort us, and reshape us. When the word of God becomes entertainment, we may still be hearing it, but we are no longer truly under it.

Application:
After reading Scripture or hearing a sermon, ask one follow-up question: “What is God asking me to do with this?”

Prayer:
Holy God, forgive me for the times I have admired your word without submitting to it. Do not let me be content with being moved for a moment when you are calling me to a changed life. Give me ears that hear and a heart that obeys. Amen.
