Scripture:
“Then He said to them all, ‘If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.’”
— Luke 9:23
Reflection:
Jesus never called people to be an audience. He did not ask for admirers, spectators, or casual consumers of spiritual experience. He called disciples. And discipleship, from the very beginning, has sounded very different from consumerism. Consumerism says protect your comfort. Jesus says deny yourself. Consumerism says customize your life around your desires. Jesus says take up your cross. Consumerism says keep your options open. Jesus says follow me.
That is why Luke 9 is so confronting. Jesus does not lower the cost in order to grow the crowd. He tells the truth about what it means to follow him. Discipleship is not just agreement. It is surrender. It is daily. It is costly. It involves saying no to the illusion that life is ultimately about my preferences, my convenience, and my control.
And yet this is also where true life begins. Jesus is not calling us away from joy. He is calling us away from the thin, fragile life that comes from constantly centering ourselves. He is inviting us into deeper freedom, the kind that comes when Christ becomes the center and not our appetites. That is a much harder invitation than consumer religion offers, but it is also a much more beautiful one.
A crowd can gather around a stage. A disciple walks behind a Savior. Those are not the same thing. One is built on interest. The other is built on surrender. One disappears when the teaching becomes costly. The other stays close, even when the road turns hard.
Application:
Today, name one area where you know Jesus is calling you to obedience, even though it costs you comfort.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, save me from being content to admire you from a distance. Teach me to follow you with courage, humility, and trust. Where you are calling me to deeper surrender, give me grace to say yes. Amen.
