Jesus for the Benefits

The Jesus Christ giving out slice of bread with a blurred background

Scripture:
“Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.”
— John 6:26

Reflection:
John 6 is one of those chapters that pulls the mask off the heart. The crowd wants more of Jesus, but not necessarily more from Jesus in the way that matters. They want more bread, more miracles, more benefit, more immediate satisfaction. Jesus sees through it. He tells them plainly that they are following him because he filled their stomachs, not because they truly understood who he was.

That is consumer religion in narrative form. People want the gifts of Jesus without the demands of Jesus. They want comfort without repentance, blessing without surrender, inspiration without obedience, encouragement without transformation. They want the parts of faith that feel nourishing, while quietly stepping back from the parts that challenge, unsettle, and reorient their lives.

And when Jesus begins to speak hard truth, many turn away. That is always a revealing moment. It is easy to stay near Jesus while he is handing out bread. It is much harder to remain when he starts talking about ultimate allegiance, costly trust, and a life that cannot be managed on our own terms. But that is exactly where discipleship begins to separate itself from mere consumption.

Sometimes the most loving thing Jesus can do is disappoint our consumer instincts so that he can heal our deeper hunger. He does not come merely to satisfy our immediate wants. He comes to give us himself, which is both more demanding and more wonderful than we often expect.

Application:
Ask yourself honestly: “Am I following Jesus mainly for what I hope he will give me, or because I trust him as Lord?”

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, forgive me for the ways I seek you only when I want something from you. Purify my love, deepen my trust, and teach me to stay with you not only when faith is comforting, but also when it is costly. Amen.
