Suffering is Not Failure

Scripture:
“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”
— 2 Corinthians 12:9

Reflection:
One of the cruelest lies prosperity theology tells is that suffering must mean failure. If blessing always means success, then hardship must mean weakness. If health always means favor, then sickness must mean spiritual deficiency. If increase always proves God is near, then loss must mean God has stepped away.

But Paul’s testimony refuses that distortion. He prayed for the thorn to be removed, and God did not remove it. Instead, God met him there with grace. Not the grace of immediate escape, but the grace of sustaining presence. Not the grace of easy answers, but the grace of strength in weakness.

That matters because so many people carry pain and then quietly add shame on top of it. They assume that if their faith were stronger, their life would be easier. But the New Testament simply does not say that. It says that Christ is with us in trouble. It says grace can meet us in the middle of the thorn. It says weakness can become the very place where God’s strength is made known.

The center of our faith is not a Messiah who avoided suffering. The center of our faith is a crucified Lord. So when life hurts, that does not mean God has left you. It may mean that grace is holding you in ways you cannot yet fully see.

Application:
If you are carrying a burden right now, tell God the truth about it without trying to dress it up in false victory.

Prayer:
Merciful Christ, when I suffer, keep me from believing the lie that you have abandoned me. Meet me with your sufficient grace, and let your strength hold me where my own strength runs thin. Amen.
