Freer, Not Richer

Scripture:
“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil…”
— 1 Timothy 6:10

Reflection:
The real promise of the gospel is not that Jesus will make us richer. It is that Jesus will make us freer. That is such an important distinction. Prosperity theology says the good life is about increase, success, and visible favor. The gospel says the good life is about Christ freeing us from what has mastered us — greed, fear, envy, striving, false worth, and the desperate lie that more is always better.

Paul does not say money itself is evil. He says the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. That means the issue is not just what we possess, but what possesses us. A person can be materially wealthy and spiritually free. A person can also be materially comfortable and spiritually enslaved. Likewise, someone can have very little and yet be deeply rich in God. The deeper question is not simply what sits in our hands, but what has wrapped itself around our hearts.

The prosperity gospel often ends up sounding a lot like the American dream with a little Jesus language sprinkled on top. It says increase is salvation, comfort is the goal, and more is the measure. But the gospel of Jesus Christ says something entirely different. Christ is salvation. Faithfulness matters more than success. Generosity matters more than accumulation. The kingdom belongs to people who know their need.

Sometimes the greatest blessing in a person’s life is not what they gained, but what no longer owns them. That is holy freedom. To discover that money does not define you, that fear does not drive you, that envy does not master you, that your worth is not up for sale — that is the kind of freedom the gospel gives.

Application:
Ask yourself today, “What has too much power over my sense of security, identity, or peace?” Then name it before God.

Prayer:
Lord, make me free. Free me from the love of money, from the fear of not having enough, from the burden of comparison, and from every false measure of worth. Teach me to trust you more deeply, and to live with open hands and a liberated heart. Amen.
