Scripture
“Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of the mind.”
— Romans 12:2
Reflection
Paul’s words to the church in Rome remind us that Christian faith is not only about changed behavior. It is also about changed thinking. The mind matters. The way we see the world matters. The assumptions we carry matter. The categories we use to decide what is possible, faithful, wise, or dangerous all shape the life we are able to live.
And Paul says that transformation comes through renewal.
That is important because renewal is not the same as novelty. The church does not need to chase every trend, baptize every cultural shift, or trade depth for relevance. But neither can the church assume that every familiar thought is a faithful thought. Sometimes what we call tradition is really fear wearing a respectable coat. Sometimes what we call prudence is simply our reluctance to imagine a different future.
Here’s the thing: one of the hardest things for faithful people to question is the way we have always thought about something. We may be willing to change a program, adjust a schedule, or try a new piece of technology, but the deeper work is allowing God to renew the assumptions underneath those decisions.
What do we believe people are looking for? What do we believe church is supposed to be? What do we believe counts as discipleship? What do we believe is possible in our neighborhood, our congregation, our generation?
Those are not merely strategic questions. They are spiritual questions.
The renewing of the mind is not about becoming less rooted in Christ. It is about becoming more available to Christ. It is about letting the Spirit loosen what has grown rigid, heal what has grown fearful, and awaken what has grown tired.
A changing world does not require a church with shallow convictions. It requires a church with deep roots and renewed minds.
Application
Choose one assumption you have about people outside the church, younger generations, worship, mission, or discipleship. Ask God to help you examine it honestly. Is it rooted in love, wisdom, and truth—or in habit, fear, or frustration?
Prayer
Renewing God, transform our minds so that we can discern your will with clarity and courage. Keep us rooted in Christ, but free us from the assumptions that keep us from following your Spirit faithfully. Amen.
