Fear Closes the Table

Scripture:
“Whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother.”
— Matthew 12:50

Reflection:
Jesus says something in Matthew 12 that sounds startling at first. His mother and brothers are outside, and when he is told they are looking for him, he answers by pointing to his disciples and saying that whoever does the will of his Father is his family. That is not Jesus being cold. It is not Jesus rejecting his mother. It is Jesus doing something deeper. He is opening the circle.

Fear always wants a smaller table. It wants familiar people, familiar roles, familiar boundaries, familiar expectations. Fear says, “Protect your own.” Fear says, “Stay with the safe people.” Fear says, “Do not let the circle widen too much.” But Jesus keeps doing the opposite. He keeps adding chairs. He keeps welcoming the outsider. He keeps forming a family bigger than biology.

That matters for us because so much of our spiritual life can be shaped by fear without us even realizing it. We want to preserve what is comfortable. We want to defend what feels stable. We want to keep life manageable. But the kingdom of God is not built on anxious protection. It is built on grace, truth, and shared life in Christ. The deepest bond in the church is not bloodline. It is obedience to God. It is baptism before bloodline.

A Christian table should not become smaller and smaller with fear. It should become wider with grace. That does not mean there are no convictions, no holiness, no discernment. It means that love is not governed by panic. It means that Jesus is always making room for people we might not have chosen on our own. And that is good news, because all of us have only found our place at the table by grace.

Application:
Think of one person who may not naturally fit your circle, and ask how Jesus might be inviting you to make room with grace.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank you for widening the circle and making room for me. Deliver me from fear that closes the table. Teach me to welcome, to trust, and to love in ways that look more like your kingdom. Amen.
