When Deconstruction Is Necessary, but Not Enough

Scripture:
“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
— Matthew 11:28

Reflection:
Some people do not drift into Jesusless Christianity because they are casual. They drift there because they are wounded. They have seen too many Christians who talked a lot about Jesus while not resembling Jesus at all. They have seen cruelty in the church, legalism without mercy, certainty without humility, exclusion without compassion, politics disguised as faith, and religion based on shame. We need to name that pain honestly.

When people see those things, it makes sense that they begin to pull back. They still want justice. They still want mercy. They still want dignity and care and honesty and compassion. They just do not want the version of Christianity that harmed them. And some of that protest is understandable. Sometimes harmful distortions really do need to be torn down. Sometimes false religion really does need to be dismantled.

But here is the danger: deconstruction is not the destination. If all we do is tear down the crooked, unsafe house and never lay a new foundation, then we have not created a home. We have only made an empty lot. Jesus does not merely call us away from bad religion. He calls us to himself. He is not the architect of the harm, but neither is he absent from the healing. The answer to bad Christianity is not less Jesus. It is more Jesus, seen more clearly.

Christ still says, “Come to Me.” Not come to a brand. Not come to a tribe. Not come to the memory of religion. Come to Me. That invitation matters, especially for the tired, the disappointed, and the spiritually bruised.

Application:
If church hurt or disappointment has shaped you, bring that pain honestly to Jesus today instead of only carrying it in reaction to others.

Prayer:
Merciful Christ, you know where your name has been used badly and where your people have failed to resemble you. Meet the wounded with gentleness, and lead us beyond reaction into real healing. Tear down what is false, but do not leave us standing in an empty lot. Bring us home to yourself. Amen.
