Form Without Power

Scripture:
“Having a form of godliness but denying its power.”
— 2 Timothy 3:5

Reflection:
One of the most haunting phrases in Scripture is this one from 2 Timothy: a form of godliness without its power. It is possible to keep a recognizable shape of faith — the language, the values, the concern, the appearance of seriousness — while losing the power that comes from the living Christ. That is the final danger of Jesusless Christianity.

The lamp illustration captures it well. A lamp can be beautifully designed. The shade can be elegant. The wiring can look fine. It may still look exactly like a lamp. But if it is unplugged, it cannot give light. That is what a Christless faith becomes. It may still keep some of the ideas alive for a while. It may still use some of the vocabulary. But it does so without the actual life of Christ being loved through it.

That is why the final question is not only what we believe about Jesus as an idea. The final question is whether we have actually come to him, trusted him, surrendered to him, and allowed him to be Lord rather than symbol. The church does not need less justice. It needs justice rooted more deeply in Jesus. The church does not need less compassion. It needs compassion shaped by Jesus. The church does not need less concern for wounded people. It needs more of the living Christ in the middle of that concern.

Forms are not enough. Symbols are not enough. Ideas are not enough. The church needs life, and that life is found only in Christ.

Application:
Ask yourself plainly today: where in my life do I still have the form of faith, but need the power of Christ to fill it again?

Prayer:
Living Christ, do not let me settle for a form without your power. Fill what has become thin, relight what has gone dim, and let your life move through my words, my convictions, and my love. Be more than a symbol to me. Be Lord. Amen.
