At the Center of Creation…Love

Scripture

1 John 4:7–8
“Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love.”

Reflection

When Scripture says, “God is love,” it is saying something far deeper than God is kind, or God is affectionate, or God has loving feelings toward us. It is saying that love belongs to the very being of God. Love is not a mood God enters. Love is not a strategy God uses. Love is not a reward God gives when we finally become worthy enough to receive it.

Love is who God eternally is.

The doctrine of the Trinity helps us understand this. Before there was a universe, before there were people to love, before there were oceans, mountains, angels, churches, hymns, prayers, or sermons, God already was love. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit existed eternally in holy communion, in self-giving love, in perfect relationship.

That means God did not create because God was lonely. God did not create because God needed servants. God did not create because God lacked something. God created out of the overflow of divine love. You and I exist because love overflowed.

That changes how we see ourselves. We are not accidents moving through a cold universe. We are not merely workers, consumers, problems, bodies, opinions, or schedules. We are creatures made by the God whose very life is love, and we were made to receive that love and reflect it into the world.

If love is at the center of God, then love must be at the center of us. Not vague love. Not easy love. Not love as a slogan. Patient love. Truthful love. Forgiving love. Holy love. The kind of love that flows from God and slowly reshapes the way we see every person we meet.

Application

Today, ask yourself: “What would change if I truly believed love is at the center of reality?” Then choose one person to treat not as an interruption, obstacle, or obligation, but as someone made for the love of God.

Prayer

Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, thank you that love is not merely something you do, but who you are. Help me receive your love more deeply and reflect it more faithfully. Let my life become a small witness to the holy love at the heart of all things. Amen.
