Into the Name…

Matthew 28:19
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

Reflection

When Jesus sends his disciples into the world, he tells them to baptize “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Not names, plural. Name, singular. The one name of the Triune God.

That means baptism is not merely a religious ceremony. It is not merely a family tradition, a church milestone, or an entry on a membership roll. Baptism places us inside the story of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It marks us with the name of the God whose life is love.

This is why Christian worship is so deeply Trinitarian. We are baptized in the name of the Trinity. We sing praise to Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We pray through Christ in the power of the Spirit. We come to the Lord’s Table where the Father welcomes us, the Son gives himself to us, and the Spirit makes Christ present among us.

Much of the time, we may not stop to think about how Trinitarian our worship is. We simply gather, sing, pray, confess, receive, and go. But underneath all of it is the movement of grace. God is drawing us into communion. God is making us part of a people. God is teaching us to live from the love we have received.

To be baptized into the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is to be reminded that we do not belong only to ourselves. We belong to God. We belong to the body of Christ. We belong inside a story larger than our private preferences, private struggles, and private ambitions.

Application

Remember your baptism today, whether you remember the event itself or not. Say aloud: “I belong to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.” Let that identity speak louder than anxiety, shame, or fear.

Prayer

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, thank you for claiming me in grace. Thank you that I belong not merely to myself, but to you and to your people. Teach me to live as one who has been drawn into your name, your story, and your love. Amen.
