Sent By Love

Scripture

John 20:21–22
“Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’ When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.’”

Reflection

The mission of the church begins in the life of God. The Father sends the Son. The Father and the Son send the Spirit. The Spirit sends the church. Before mission is something we organize, it is something that flows from the heart of the Triune God.

That means Christian mission is not simply recruitment for an institution. It is not merely persuading people to agree with religious ideas. It is not growing a club, protecting a brand, or proving that we are right. Christian mission is invitation into the life of God.

We are sent to bear witness to the love of the Father, the grace of the Son, and the transforming presence of the Holy Spirit. We are sent because God’s love moves outward. The God who is eternal communion opens that communion to the world.

This should shape the way we go. If God is Triune love, then our witness cannot be rooted in arrogance. If God is self-giving love, then our mission cannot be self-serving. If God comes near in Christ, then we cannot love the world from a distance. If the Spirit is already at work before we arrive, then we do not go as saviors.

We go as witnesses, servants, neighbors, and friends.

That may be one of the most important reminders the church can receive. We do not carry God into places where God has never been. We join the mission of the God who is already present, already loving, already calling, already working, already inviting the world into grace.

Application

Choose one ordinary place you will go today — work, store, neighborhood, phone call, meeting, home. Before you enter it, pray: “Spirit, help me join what you are already doing here.”

Prayer

Sending God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, draw me into your mission of love. Free me from arrogance, fear, and self-service. Send me as a witness, servant, neighbor, and friend, trusting that your Spirit is already at work before I arrive. Amen.
