Servant First

“Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James.” — Jude 1

Reflection

Jude could have introduced himself in a much more impressive way. He was almost certainly one of the brothers of Jesus. He could have opened his letter by reminding everyone that he had grown up in the same home as the One they now worshiped as Lord. He had stories no one else could tell and connections no one else could claim.

Instead, Jude calls himself “a servant of Jesus Christ.” Whatever privileges, relationships, or accomplishments shaped his life, Jude understood that his deepest identity was found in belonging to Jesus. He was not trying to build his authority upon his family name. He was placing his life under the authority of Christ.

Most of us carry several identities at once. We are parents, spouses, children, employees, leaders, neighbors, church members, and friends. Some identities bring us joy. Others carry expectations that can become heavy. We can spend a great deal of energy trying to prove that we deserve the positions we occupy.

Jude offers us a simpler foundation. Before we are anything else, we belong to Jesus. Our worth is not determined by how impressive we appear, how much we accomplish, or how many people recognize our contributions. We are servants of Christ—people whose lives have been claimed by grace and given a holy purpose.

Application

Choose one role or title that has become especially important to your sense of identity. Ask yourself whether that role is helping you serve Christ or whether you are using it to establish your value. Find one quiet way to serve someone today without seeking recognition.

Prayer

Jesus Christ, remind me that my deepest identity is found in belonging to you. Free me from the need to impress others, defend my importance, or measure my life by recognition. Teach me to serve with humility, gratitude, and love. Use my life for your purposes today. Amen.
