Something Precious Has Been Entrusted to Us

Scripture

“I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people.” — Jude 3

Reflection

Jude describes the Christian faith as something that has been entrusted to us. That is an important word. An entrusted gift is not something we created, and it is not something we own completely. It has been placed into our care.

The gospel came to us through other people. Someone taught us Scripture. Someone told us about Jesus. Someone prayed with us, worshiped beside us, answered our questions, or simply lived in such a way that faith became believable. Even if our spiritual journey has been complicated, none of us invented Christianity for ourselves.

Now the faith has been placed into our hands. That does not mean we are responsible for preserving every tradition exactly as we received it. Worship styles change. Churches change. Language changes. The way one generation expresses faith may look very different from another. But beneath all of those changing forms is something precious: the good news of Jesus Christ.

We have received a story about a God who loves the world, a Savior who gives himself for us, grace that welcomes sinners, a Spirit who transforms lives, and a kingdom that calls us toward justice, mercy, holiness, and love. That is the treasure we have been given.

The question is not simply, “Will we keep what previous generations gave us?” The deeper question is, “Will we faithfully carry Christ to the generation that comes after us?”

Application

Think of one person who helped place Christian faith into your hands. Thank God for that person. Then identify one person—perhaps younger than you—to whom you can intentionally pass on encouragement, wisdom, or faith.

Prayer

Faithful God, thank you for those who carried the faith before me and placed the good news of Jesus into my hands. Help me treasure what is essential without confusing the gospel with my own preferences. Give me wisdom to live faithfully and generosity to pass your grace on to others. Amen.
