Remember What You Know

Scripture

“But, dear friends, remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ foretold.” — Jude 17

Reflection

Jude begins his final instructions with a remarkably simple word: remember.

When life becomes confusing, our instinct is often to search frantically for something new—new information, new answers, new explanations, some insight that will suddenly make everything clear. Jude tells the church to begin somewhere else. Remember what you have already been given.

The early Christians had been warned that faith would sometimes be distorted, that selfishness could wear religious clothing, and that people could use the language of God while living in ways that contradicted the character of Christ. Jude tells them not to be shocked by this. Return to what you know. Return to the gospel. Return to Jesus.

Remembering is an important spiritual discipline because fear has a way of making us forget. We forget what God has already carried us through. We forget prayers that have been answered. We forget truths that once seemed certain. We forget that generations before us have faced uncertainty and still discovered that God was faithful.

Sometimes keeping the faith begins not by learning something new, but by remembering what grace has already taught us. We remember that God has been faithful before. We remember that Christ is still Lord. We remember that we are not the first people to walk through uncertainty. And we remember the words with which Jude began his letter: we are called, loved, and kept.

Application

Write down three things about God that you have learned through your own experience of faith. Then think of one specific moment when God’s faithfulness became real to you. Keep that list somewhere you can return to when you feel spiritually unsettled or uncertain.

Prayer

Faithful God, when fear and confusion make me forget, bring me back to what is true. Remind me of your faithfulness, your promises, and the grace I have already experienced. When I cannot see clearly what lies ahead, help me remember how you have carried me before. Give me wisdom to recognize what changes and courage to hold onto what does not. Amen.
